The Gay, Inc. schlock rag that used to be the Advocate spews:
Both Buzzfeed and Bilerico posited the theory that Robinson’s removal was sparked by anti-trans bias, with the latter publishing an article on July 10 asking if the OutServe-SLDN scenario was “LGB Transphobia Rearing Its Ugly Head?” Other reports from Bilerico and Buzzfeed accused former co-chair Josh Seefried of leading a coup against Robinson, whose star was rising, arguably overshadowing Seefried.
But those reports are “completely false,” says current board chairwoman April Heinze. “The decline in funding had been a growing concern of the board for months and several special board meetings had been held to address reducing expenses and increasing revenue,” Heinze explains. “In the end, the board had to make a very tough decision to layoff staff and eliminate our physical offices in order to pay our bills.”
Nothing in the piece actually disproves the very real probability that transphobia was somwhere at the center of the mess, be it the primary reason or a strong second.
Gay, Inc. has long ago learned how to couch its transphobia in precisely the same terms that the rest of corporate America couches its homophobia (just ask any board member of NGLTF why the organization doesn’t hire trans people – or, in my case, even respond to my job application – to work on trans issues.) Moreover, it in no way touches upon the possibility that the transphobic act wasn’t the firing but, rather, hiring her to captain a ship that they already knew was sinking, thereby giving Gay, Inc. the ‘justification’ – a justification it already believed was self-proven – to never hire trans women for anything, much less relevant positions.
Who needs Fox ‘News’ when we have Gay, Inc. hack ‘journalists’ protecting Gay, Inc. by manufacturing fake history?
